Abstract

This research addresses the implementation of a gamified strategy in the Differential Calculus course at Unidad Académica Multidisciplinaria Mante-Centro (UAMM-Centro) of the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (Mexico), aimed at students (men and women) in the Computer Systems Engineering program. Using a quasi-experimental design with control and experimental groups (n = 44), the study evaluated the impact of gamification on academic performance and student engagement. The intervention was supported by interactive resources created with Genially, applied through seven exercises aligned with the official course syllabus. The results showed a 116 % increase in the average score of the experimental group (from 34 to 73), with a statistically significant difference compared to the control group (t = - 8.27; p < 0.001; d ≈ 2.01). Additionally, all students in the gamified group passed the course, whereas the control group had a 21.70 % failure rate. Student perception was also significant: 76 % stated that the strategy enhanced their learning and motivation. In conclusion, when pedagfostery integrated and supported by appropriate technology, gamification improves academic achievement and fosters active participation, establishing itself as an effective alternative for teaching complex subjects such as Calculus in higher education.
